101 in 1001 Update

Since the start of 2011, I’ve been in somewhat of an introspective mood. I graduated from university 8 months ago and I thought that I would have a job by now or at least have dealt with more of my issues. I really long while ago, I started a 101 in 1001 list. I realized that I haven’t updated (or even really looked at!) the list recently. Since I’ve been contemplating my plans and goals for 2011, I thought it would be appropriate to update it to get myself back on track at least in some regard.

Ones I have Completed:

7. Learn how to use my dSLR camera completely on manual. Completed October 2010 – I started learning how to really use my camera at the end of August. My first photography course helped me fill in the blanks about the things I didn’t get, like exposure compensation!

8. Print and hang one of my photos. November 2010 – Some of my photos are hanging in our bedroom.

9. Do a photoshoot with someone (bridal, wedding, family, etc.) August 2010 – A lady at my parent’s church asked me to photograph her vow renewal. It was a really good experience!

11.  Clean and sort storage under the stairs. Finished October 2010.

64.  Attend a one-on-one resume writing session. September 2010.

82.  Visit Mr. Bean’s family back east. August 2010 – we went to Ontario for Mr. Bean’s cousin’s wedding and I got to meet a whole bunch of people from his family that I had never met before!

83.  Go somewhere in Alberta I’ve never been to before. August 2010 – I visited my friend’s farm in central eastern Alberta. Never been there before!

84.  Go somewhere in Canada I’ve never been to before. August 2010 – again, going to Ontario. I had never been to Ontario except for the Toronto Airport, but that doesn’t count.

95.  Go to ten restaurants I’ve never been to before. 1. The Belgo in Downtown Calgary, 2. Una Pizzeria in Calgary (with delicious gluten free pizza), 3. The Bella Notta in Motala, 4. The Smaka in Gothenburg, 5. Dom Trappulen in Uppsala, 6. & 7. Two Restaurants in Fussen that I don’t remember what they are called, 8. The Restaurant at the Steigenberger Hotel in Frankfurt 9. Melissa’s MisSteak in Banff 10. Brewsters in Calgary.

99.  Redesign my blog appearance. Completed October 2010 – aren’t the pink flowers pretty?

With that, I have completed 34/101

There are a few things that I have no been able to complete, so I should probably change them to something more attainable:

15.  Vacuum once a week (0/143) (1/58) I am restarting this on January 1, 2011 as I have not kept track.

18.  Dust once a month (0/32) (1/13) See 15 above.

19.  Keep my plant alive for at least a year (0/365) (The plant lasted a grand total of two months. How’s that for a green thumb fail?) Grow Herbs/Plants on my deck and keep them alive all summer

38.  Take Social 2 and 3 ballroom dance lessons (We took Social 2 in 2009-2010 with the University Ballroom Dance Club. We decided not to continue with this club or into Social 3 as the instructor kind of took the fun out of it.) Continue to take social dance lessons year round (4/7)

It’s kind of weird that I have just over 13 months to complete 66 tasks, but given that many of them are cumulative, it’s possible to get at least 80 or so done. Just being realistic. 😉

Goals and Such

At the beginning of last year, I wrote out a list of goals that I wanted to achieve. Let’s see how I did:

  1. Finish School. I totally did this and did really well to boot!
  2. Decide what I want to do in life. I still have no clue. I have applied for some jobs (and went through some job interviews) with no luck. I did realize that I really enjoy photography, so I started taking some photography courses at the local technical college.
  3. Honesty. I tried really hard, but I’m still really too self-conscious to be 100% honest. Frankly, there are also some things that are way more appropriate for my journal than the internet.
  4. Clear up my face. I’ve tried lots of different things. My face is starting to clear up a bit more – I’ve been trying to take a Cod live oil pill everyday and have been washing & moisturizing my face with some Neutrogena acne stuff. I’m kind of sad that the more natural stuff wasn’t working, but I guess I want to do what I can to clear it up.
  5. Lose Weight. I have managed to lose weight – mostly through not over eating and going to the gym frequently. I also lost a few pounds over Christmas because of the stomach flu. My mum and I have started to see a trainer once a week at our gym, so I’m looking forward to the results from that!
  6. Exercise for at least 1/2 hour everyday. I probably do this about 95% of the time. On days where I don’t manage to get any exercise, I try to eat less.
  7. Do a longer than one minute devotional everyday. I started using Scripture Union’s “Daily Bread” devotional as I eat breakfast every morning. It generally takes about 5 – 15 minutes depending on the scripture passage and what follow-up or prayers they recommend doing.

Now the big question is: what goals do I want to set for myself for 2011? I find I work best if the goal is quantifiable and I get some sort of reward at the end.

  • Continue to exercise for at least 1/2 hour everyday. I know that when I don’t get exercise, I am grumpy, more stressed out and anxious.
  • Keep the weight I lost off. I think that’s pretty self-explanatory.
  • Get up off the couch and enjoy outside. I’ve spent a lot of time in the last few years essentially sitting around inside and I think it’s about time that Mr. Bean and I get out and enjoy the opportunities available to us. (The Rocky Mountains are about an hour drive away!) Goal: Try to spend at least one Saturday/Sunday a month out of the house doing something outside.
  • Not let fear rule my life. I always feel that so much has been holding me back as I have a lot of fear issues, I can be extremely self-conscious and I don’t always believe that I have anything worthwhile to offer. I am going to counselling, so hopefully this year I can continue to make progress and be able to get on with life!
  • Spend more time in prayer. I’m going to start with 5 minutes a day and see how things go after that.
  • Get a job or at least figure out what I want to do. Hopefully the more time in prayer and working through issues in counselling will help with this.

I feel that I might actually be able to accomplish these over the next year – they are all steps in my journey to becoming a happier, healthier and spiritually alive person.

My New Years Goals

Given that tonight is my last night of freedom before block week of this semester starts tomorrow morning, i thought it would be appropriate to talk about the goals I have set for myself for this semester and the rest of the year. But mostly for this upcoming semester as I haven’t thought too much about what happens afterwards (see the second bullet.)

In no particular order:

  • Finish school. I know this seems like a no brainer, but this upcoming semester could be the hardest one yet. I only have four courses (for the first time in my life!), but there’s a lot to be done. Like completely designing a propylene plant for example.
  • Decide what I want to do in life. At this point, I really don’t know what I want to do and that uncertainty causes a lot of stress. I’ve got a fair amount of soul-searching and discernment to do.
  • Honesty. I have a lot of issues of caring too much about what other people think of me, so I don’t often truly say what is on my mind. I’m trying to learn that it only matters what God thinks of me, so expect more debate topics in the future as I release my inner activist. Plus, once I work up the courage, I’d like to share more about my battle with depression over of the last year plus.
  • Clear up my face. I talked about this before and my face has gotten better but it hasn’t cleared up completely. I recently went over to my local health food store and got a new regime to try once my current cleanser is complete.
  • Lose weight. Over the last semester, my schedule and studying resulting in lots of sitting and eating (too much) at weird times. Mr. Bean and I are hoping to go on a trip this spring once I graduate and I’d like to ditch the extra 5 lbs I’ve been carrying around.
  • Exercise for at least 1/2 hr every day. This ties into the previous goal and is also an effective method of dealing with some of the stress I know that I will be experiencing.
  • Do a longer-than-one-minute devotional every day. I have been reading daily email devotionals, but I want to up what I’ve been doing because my relationship with God is important to me. Mr. Bean and I recently signed up for a Scripture Union daily devotional that is a little more involved.

Why am I telling you all of this? Because the most important thing about setting goals other than actually setting them is accountability. I’m hoping that you all and the blogging world will help me with that. And unlike my 101 in 1001 (I promise I haven’t neglected them completely!), these goals are fairly attainable while going through ones last semester of engineering. 🙂
