101 in 1001 Conclusion

…105 days late, but that’s apparently the way it goes now that I’ve started working. Some of them have been completed in the last little bit, but I’m okay with that as I’m happy that at least I’m doing something with this. Interesting how one’s expectations lowers when they don’t have time.

Start Date: May 16th, 2009

End Date: February 11th, 2012

1. Make a Tiered Cake Finished June 2009 in the Wilton 3 class.

2. Complete all four Wilton Cake Decorating Classes (4/4) Finished July 2009. See my cakes here.

3. Create my own cake recipe from scratch that my whole family can eat It wasn’t directly a recipe from scratch, but I made a version of this carrot cake for my brother’s wedding that was gluten, soy, dairy, egg and cinnamon free and wasn’t mush. Win! Complete May 2012.

4. Create a mini recipe book of my favourite recipes using photo in press. I made a mini recipe book for my grandpa, who is a celiac for Christmas 2009 using Staples printing centre. I want to make another actually using photo-in-press or blurb.

5. Make a complete meal from my Cretan Cookbook – Hasn’t been done.

6. Get a light to help take food photos at night with It’s not an actual photography light – it’s a full spectrum light my mom gave me behind a large piece of paper. The idea is that the paper makes the light source larger, which results in a more diffuse light, which is better for taking food photos. It’s not perfect, but it definitely beats using my kitchen lights!

7. Learn how to use my dSLR camera completely on manual Proficient by October 2010.

8. Print and hang one of my photos November 2010 –  Some of my photos are hanging in our bedroom.

9. Do a photoshoot with someone (bridal, wedding, family, etc.) August 2010 – took photos of a vow renewal at my parent’s church. Since then, I have taken many photos for friends, my brother and I have been asked to photograph my friend’s wedding this summer. Exciting!

10.  Arrange a bouquet of flowers and give it to someone

15.  Vacuum once a week (0/143) (4/58) Yeah, this definitely didn’t happen.

16.  Decorate our living room We got some more shelves, added some pictures and organized the shelves to display things better and got rid of things that were messy. That’s decorating enough for me.

17.  Re-grout bathtub Mr. Bean did this sometime Spring 2010.

Did you do the 101 in 1001? How did it go?

A Few Changes Around Here…

I actually remembered to check SITS blog the other day, only to come across a post on how not to design your blog. The author talks about how it needs to be obvious what kind of blog one has – I don’t know if I do a good job of that or not but I assume that it’s fairly obvious that this blog is about things I like and my quest to find myself. I thought that I could rearrange things slightly to be more clear about what things I want to share with you lovely readers, as you can see in the menu above:

From that, I realized that I haven’t updated my “About Me” page recently. I decided to combine the “About Me” and “Why This” into one about section so that you can see what this blog is all about in one go. I also added a picture of myself and Mr. Bean, just in case you wanted to know what we look like without going through many, many posts.

As mentioned in the “About” section, the direction I’m moving this blog in is to share my thoughts on life, my adventures with gluten free food and my photography. I then realized that I didn’t have a page summarizing my recipes like many food blogs do and I didn’t have a way to share what I’ve been learning in my photography classes like I do for my Wilton Cake decorating classes. So, I spent a bunch of time and pulled together a bunch of links and created two new pages: One showcasing the recipes on this blog and the other my recent photography.

I also updated my 101 in 1001 List. I have now completed 39 of the 101 tasks – I don’t think I’ll be able to finish all 101, but I think I’ll be happy to complete between 75 – 90 of them. Unless, of course, I change some of them – does anyone know the rules about that?

Have you made some tweaks to your blog recently? What kinds of things would you like to see me write about?

101 in 1001 Update

Since the start of 2011, I’ve been in somewhat of an introspective mood. I graduated from university 8 months ago and I thought that I would have a job by now or at least have dealt with more of my issues. I really long while ago, I started a 101 in 1001 list. I realized that I haven’t updated (or even really looked at!) the list recently. Since I’ve been contemplating my plans and goals for 2011, I thought it would be appropriate to update it to get myself back on track at least in some regard.

Ones I have Completed:

7. Learn how to use my dSLR camera completely on manual. Completed October 2010 – I started learning how to really use my camera at the end of August. My first photography course helped me fill in the blanks about the things I didn’t get, like exposure compensation!

8. Print and hang one of my photos. November 2010 – Some of my photos are hanging in our bedroom.

9. Do a photoshoot with someone (bridal, wedding, family, etc.) August 2010 – A lady at my parent’s church asked me to photograph her vow renewal. It was a really good experience!

11.  Clean and sort storage under the stairs. Finished October 2010.

64.  Attend a one-on-one resume writing session. September 2010.

82.  Visit Mr. Bean’s family back east. August 2010 – we went to Ontario for Mr. Bean’s cousin’s wedding and I got to meet a whole bunch of people from his family that I had never met before!

83.  Go somewhere in Alberta I’ve never been to before. August 2010 – I visited my friend’s farm in central eastern Alberta. Never been there before!

84.  Go somewhere in Canada I’ve never been to before. August 2010 – again, going to Ontario. I had never been to Ontario except for the Toronto Airport, but that doesn’t count.

95.  Go to ten restaurants I’ve never been to before. 1. The Belgo in Downtown Calgary, 2. Una Pizzeria in Calgary (with delicious gluten free pizza), 3. The Bella Notta in Motala, 4. The Smaka in Gothenburg, 5. Dom Trappulen in Uppsala, 6. & 7. Two Restaurants in Fussen that I don’t remember what they are called, 8. The Restaurant at the Steigenberger Hotel in Frankfurt 9. Melissa’s MisSteak in Banff 10. Brewsters in Calgary.

99.  Redesign my blog appearance. Completed October 2010 – aren’t the pink flowers pretty?

With that, I have completed 34/101

There are a few things that I have no been able to complete, so I should probably change them to something more attainable:

15.  Vacuum once a week (0/143) (1/58) I am restarting this on January 1, 2011 as I have not kept track.

18.  Dust once a month (0/32) (1/13) See 15 above.

19.  Keep my plant alive for at least a year (0/365) (The plant lasted a grand total of two months. How’s that for a green thumb fail?) Grow Herbs/Plants on my deck and keep them alive all summer

38.  Take Social 2 and 3 ballroom dance lessons (We took Social 2 in 2009-2010 with the University Ballroom Dance Club. We decided not to continue with this club or into Social 3 as the instructor kind of took the fun out of it.) Continue to take social dance lessons year round (4/7)

It’s kind of weird that I have just over 13 months to complete 66 tasks, but given that many of them are cumulative, it’s possible to get at least 80 or so done. Just being realistic. 😉

If you’ve been doing the 101 in 1001, how is your progress?

If you are participating, please link up your list as I would like to read it! Thank you!

Stampede Party 2009

Currently in Calgary, it is Stampede time, which means free pancake breakfasts* and work stampede parties! It also means that lots of people are dressed in western garb – including cowboy hats!

A while ago, the city was handing out free cowboy hats and one of the other interns and I went and picked some up. We weren’t pleased with the boring white hat with black ribbon, so on Tuesday at lunch we brought supplies and decorated our hats. There’s no way better to show off your company pride then to put its name in rhinestones on your hat.

Here’s my hat:

Please don’t mind my incredibly messy desk. I have difficulty keeping it clean.

And here we are at our work’s party:

Does your city/town have any special annual events?

*Today was an uber stampede day for me – in the morning I volunteered at our building’s stampede breakfast (one of my 101 things) and then the work party that started at lunch!

May’s Date Night

For May’s date night, Mr. Bean and I went to one of our favourite Greek restaurant, The Broken Plate. (Come to think of it, I haven’t found a Greek Restaurant that I haven’t liked…)

Mr. Bean had his favourite – Calimari – for an appetizer:

While we were waiting for dinner, the servers danced to Zorba the Greek:

Our dinners were especially tasty. I had lamb slovaki:

and Mr. Bean had Greek Steak called “Brizola”:

For dessert I had my favourite, creme brulee:

Mr Bean had baklava ice cream with carmelized pear:

After dinner, we attempted to watch The Beatles’ “Hard Days Night”, but it overheated our playstation moonlighting as a DVD player, so we watched the Transformers instead. All in all, it was a great evening!
